- Understanding language ~ Characteristics of those with auditory processing disorders may include the following:
- Following verbal directives ~ difficulty understanding, starting, or completing conversations
- Voice modulation difficulties ~ too loud or too soft, or monotone
- Difficulty with the phonological awareness skills necessary for reading decoding (sounding out the words) and encoding (spelling)
- Difficulty ‘hearing’ the sounds within the words
- Difficulty with letter-sound associations
- Difficulty with segmentation – defining the number of words in a sentence, the number of syllables in a word, and the number of sounds in a word
- Difficulty understanding conversational speech or following a conversation, especially when there is more than one communication partner
- Difficulty with reading comprehension, specifically making inferences, predicting outcomes and understanding abstract concepts
